Our history

South West Goulburn Landcare was established in 1989, three years after Landcare began in Victoria and the year the movement went national. It brings together the Landcare groups working in the catchments of the creeks that run from the Great Dividing Range down to the Goulburn River near Seymour, with Broadford at the centre and around 170 members. Over that time the network and its groups have run coordinated weed and pest programs, blackberry control across the Dabyminga catchment, waterway fencing and soil health trials, and above all tree planting, including the annual Glenaroua community planting, which has run for more than 25 years.

How the network works

Each of our member groups runs its own patch and its own projects, with its own committee. The network links them together, sharing a facilitator, coordinating funding, and running projects that are bigger than any one group. Each member group appoints a representative to sit on the network committee, alongside representatives from Mitchell Shire Council, the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. Every member has one vote and four members form a quorum, so decisions are made by the groups themselves rather than for them. The committee meets at least four times a year and holds an annual general meeting, where the office holders are elected for the year ahead, and by long-standing practice the presidency rotates around the member groups.
